The European Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons (ESTMJS) is a non-profit society of specialists dedicated to the diagnosis and surgical management of temporomandibular joint disorders. Our members have shaped the field through pioneering clinical and research work; and together we set standards, publish evidence-based scientific work, and support the surgeons who will carry this area forward.
Our Journey… So far…
ESTMJS was founded in 2009 in Rome, on the initiative of Piero Cascone (Italy) and Gerhard Undt (Austria), in close relationship with the American Society of TMJ Surgeons (ASTMJS). On 18 April 2009, nineteen European specialists, together with Louis Mercuri, representing the ASTMJS, signed the founding constitution.
Since then, the society has met every year across Europe, building a shared body of knowledge and, more recently, publishing formal consensus recommendations. Our Constitution and Bylaws were most recently revised and approved in Vienna in May 2026. We remain a small, focused society whose influence on TMJ surgery is out of proportion to its size.
Our Objective
To advance the science and practice of rehabilitation for individuals with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and to stimulate more accurate knowledge among both healthcare specialists and the public.
Our Mission
ESTMJS is committed to the care of people living with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. The society works to extend and improve understanding of the pathophysiology and clinical management of these conditions, and to identify the most effective solutions for patients. By every appropriate means, we seek to improve the health-care services provided to people with TMJ disorders and, with them, their quality of life.
Membership
Membership is a privilege, awarded by nomination and on merit. Candidates are proposed by two Active Members with the Board’s support, and must demonstrate proven surgical experience in TMJ surgery (evidenced by a comprehensive logbook) together with a record of academic contribution.

Everything ESTMJS does is guided by a shared set of principles:

- Excellence – membership is earned on merit, and we hold everything the society produces to the same standard.
Executive Committee and Board
The society is governed by a Board of officers, elected at the Annual General Meeting for two-year terms. The Presidency runs on a continuous succession track: the Incoming President automatically succeeds the President, who then serves as Immediate Past-President (Board Advisor).
